Tempo fa vidi questa immagine….ne fui subito colpito!! Due piloti avversari che si abbracciano durante un evento sportivo dei primi del ‘900…avversari, ma rispettosi l’uno dell’altro!!Sicuramente una bella immagine di sport.Per questo motivo ho cercato di capirne di più…I due protagonisti di questa storia sono Albert William “Shrimp” Burns e Harry Otto Walker, rispettati concorrenti, ed ex compagni di squadra, rivali e due dei padri fondatori più impavidi, appassionati e iconici nella storia delle corse motociclistiche americane. Il momento fu catturato durante le gare di campionato tenutesi all’Ascot Park di Los Angeles l’11 gennaio 1920. Burns aveva appena lasciato bruscamente il team ufficiale Harley-Davidson e aveva fatto il suo debutto la domenica prima come nuovo membro del team ufficiale Indian. Secondo quanto riferito, le tensioni tra Burns e il capitano del team Harley ad interim Otto Walker sono stati un fattore determinante nella sua decisione di separarsi dal potente team di Milwaukee, che gli aveva dato il suo primo contratto di corse professionistiche solo un anno prima.Burns, che aveva avuto un brutto debutto la settimana prima ad Ascot con una scuderia di Wigwam afflitta da problemi meccanici, è tornato l’11 gennanio con la tenacia di un uomo con qualcosa da dimostrare. Il leggero californiano ha conquistato il primo posto nella gara di 25 miglia a una velocità media di 81 mph, diventando il primo campione nazionale M&ATA del 1920. Il suo ex compagno di squadra Otto Walker era in realtà in testa a quella gara, ma dopo aver consumato il battistrada della gomma posteriore ha avuto una terribile scivolata ed è caduto all’ultima curva, permettendo al suo vecchio rivale di superarlo per la vittoria. Imperterrito, Walker è comunque riuscito a rimontare in sella alla sua Harley racer ,e ad arrivare al 3° posto. Nella gara di Ascot delle 50 miglia invece ,vincerà Walker lasciando a Burns il secondo posto….Non è chiaro alla fine di quale gara sia stata scattata questa fotografia, anche se mi piace pensare che sia stato catturato un momento dopo la gara di 25 miglia, subito dopo la caduta di Walker . In qualunque misura le notizie sulla loro rivalità siano vere, resta il fatto che entrambi gli uomini avevano la forza d’animo e la spinta a rischiare tutto per il loro sport, qualità che questi uomini sicuramente ammiravano l’uno nell’altro. Questo momento sembra catturare quel rispetto reciproco, la preoccupazione generale che questi pionieri gentiluomini avevano l’uno per l’altro indipendentemente da critiche o lamentele.Entrambi i piloti nel 1998 sono stati inserito nella AMA Motorcycle Hall Of Fame…..

Some time ago I saw this image …. I was immediately struck !! Two opposing pilots embracing during a sporting event from the early 1900s…opponents, but respectful of each other!!Definitely a beautiful sporting image.For this reason I tried to understand more about it…The two protagonists of this story are Albert William “Shrimp” Burns and Harry Otto Walker, respected competitors, and former teammates, rivals and two of the most fearless, passionate and iconic founding fathers in the history of American motorcycle racing. The moment was captured during the championship races held at Ascot Park in Los Angeles on January 11, 1920. Burns had just abruptly left the Harley-Davidson factory team and made his debut the Sunday before as a new member of the Indian factory team . Tensions between Burns and interim Harley team captain Otto Walker were reportedly a factor in his decision to part ways with the powerful Milwaukee-based team, which had given him his first professional racing contract just a year earlier.Burns, who had made a poor debut the week before at Ascot with a mechanically troubled Wigwam stable, returned on 11 January with the tenacity of a man with something to prove. The lightweight Californian took first place in the 25-mile race at an average speed of 81 mph, becoming the first M&ATA National Champion of 1920. His former teammate Otto Walker was actually leading that race, but after worn out the tread on his rear tire he had a terrible slide and crashed in the last corner, allowing his old rival to overtake him for the win. Undeterred, Walker still managed to get back on his Harley racer and finish in 3rd place. In the Ascot 50 mile race, Walker will win, leaving Burns in second place….It’s unclear at the end of which race this photograph was taken, although I like to think he was captured a moment after the 25-mile race, just after Walker’s crash. To whatever extent the reports of their rivalry are true, the fact remains that both men had the fortitude and drive to risk everything for their sport, qualities these men surely admired in each other. This moment seems to capture that mutual respect, general concern these pioneering gentlemen had for one another regardless of criticism or complaint.Both riders were inducted into the AMA Motorcycle Hall Of Fame in 1998…..
